Television viewers like what they are seeing on Shortland Street, but the long-twinkling star of Coronation Street appears to be on the wane.
Results of this year’s TV Guide Best on the Box awards show viewers rate actor Ben Mitchell, who plays Dr TK Samuels on Shortland Street, as the sexiest man on the small screen.
“I am really stoked to have been acknowledged like this by the people who actually watch the show. There was some really strong contenders in the category, so I am surprised that I won at all,” the actor said.
The sexiest woman award went to actor Anna Hutchison, who plays Amy in Go Girls.
Shortland Street had another win with Amanda Billing, who plays Sarah Potts, being voted best actress, while the soap was also chosen as viewers’ favourite – and least favourite – show.
“I guess you could say we love to hate it,” TV Guide editor Julie Eley said.
Coronation Street seems to be losing favour with viewers, ranking second in the least-favourite show category and not making the top three on the favourite list. Second most favourite show, after Shortland Street, was comedy programme 7 Days and then The ITM Fishing Show.
Best actor was Shane Cortese for his roles in Nothing Trivial and The Almighty Johnsons.
Best comedy show 7 Days also had the funniest person in Dai Henwood.
The Crowd Goes Wild, 3 News and Campbell Live each won two awards.
More than 12,000 people voted in the poll, casting more than 260,000 unique votes, TV Guide said.
In contrast to this year’s choice of actors as the sexiest people on television, last year viewers chose Breakfast weather presenter Tamati Coffey and weekend host Toni Street as the sexiest man and woman.
