Before Melanie Blatt came to New Zealand to take on the job as judge at The X Factor she had never heard of Stan Walker or Ruby Frost, and the only Kiwi band she knew was Crowded House.
“I wasn’t sure how Ruby was going to do this. Even on the first meet she was a bit shy and I was like ‘oh I wonder what she’s going to be like…’,” the former All Saints member told Remix Magazine.
But after a while Blatt found out that the young judge was “really feisty and she’s got huge balls,” that Walker was a “revelation” and Daniel Bedingfield was “just a nutcase.”
Asked for what sort of talent she was looking for in the competition the 38-year-old said “something special, that sets them apart from the rest and someone who has an honesty about them….they can be ugly with a rubbish voice and still have charisma.”
While she is pushing her mentorees, girl group Gap 5, Blatt ruled out ever getting back together with her own girl group All Saints.
“Honestly, I don’t think the group will get back together: We were young and in at the time. I don’t think there is any need for us to come back out now.
“Does anybody really want to hear or see a girl band in their thirties,” she asked.
The singer also admitted that she doesn’t listen to much contemporary music, which would explain some of the song choices for her groups which have landed all of them at some point in the bottom two position.
Of her three groups L.O.V.E were voted off two weeks ago while boy band Moorhouse found themselves in the bottom two in the same week, and Gap 5 landed the bottom two this Monday.
