A 25-year-old man has been charged over the horrific stabbing incident which left English Premier league footballer Calum Davenport in a serious condition in hospital with leg wounds.
Davenport and his 49-year-old mother were attacked in the early hours of Saturday morning at her home in Bedford, a town just over 90 kilometers north of London. Former England under-21 international Davenport had emergency surgery for stab wounds to both legs and remained in a serious but stable condition, said police. His mother is also “recovering well” from the injuries she received in the incident. Bedfordshire police said Worrell Whitehurst, from Derby, had been charged with grievous bodily harm in connection with the alleged stabbing. He was also charged with causing actual bodily harm to Davenport’s mother, possession of a knife and a driving offense.

A 19-year-old man arrested shortly after the incident was released on police bail pending further inquiries, police added. Davenport has been linked with a move away from his club West Ham after failing to hold down a regular first team place under manager Gianfranco Zola. Bedford-born Davenport had a spell on loan at Premier League rivals Sunderland last season and has also been loaned out to second-flight Watford. He joined West Ham from London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in a $5 million move in the summer of 2007. Zola was quoted on West Ham’s official Web site, wishing Davenport a speedy recovery. “We can only imagine what happened to him and we are close to him. Hopefully, he will get better very quickly,” he said.
