Legendary Kiwi musician Neil Finn thinks Lorde should leave New Zealand.
He is the second New Zealand celebrity to call for Lorde to leave her homeland after television personality Charlotte Dawson gave the same advice from Australia last week.
Finn told The Guardian it was time for the 17-year-old singer to leave the intense glare of the New Zealand media.
“Those news teams are idiots,” he said, referring to the media scrum after Lorde’s return to Auckland from winning two Grammys in Los Angeles last month.
“New Zealand had, up until that moment, been quite a good environment [for her] because people are not super celebrity-oriented; they pretty much leave you alone.
“But it keeps reaching this new critical mass and now, with winning two Grammys, I think it’s getting pretty intense.”
Finn, who tasted international musical acclaim as a member of Split Enz and Crowded House, said Lorde would be better served being a smaller fish in a bigger pond.
“I’d think she might go well moving to New York or something, where there are more famous people and less bother about it,” he said.
“It wouldn’t be a bad move to get among the centre of operations.”
Lorde will sing at a horse racing meeting in the United States in May.
While singing at the races is not a massive honour in New Zealand, it is apparently a big deal in America.
Lorde will headline the Preakness Stakes InfieldFest concert on May 17, the Baltimore Sun reported.
“We believe Lorde is cutting edge,” Maryland Jockey Club president Tom Chuckas said.
“Some people think she’s the next Madonna or Lady Gaga.”
