Eva Longoria has been honoured for her role as a women’s rights activist.
The actress was a guest of honour at the Women of Distinction Awards Gala organised by the Young Women’s Christian Association in Washington, DC, UK newspaper The Mirror reports.
YWVA CEO Dara Richardson-Heron heaped praise on the actress before the event, noting Eva’s devotion to empowering women to be more politically active.
“At a time when women are growing as a powerful force in American culture and politics, we are delighted to honour Eva Longoria for her activism, especially for her efforts to encourage all women to exercise their right to vote,” she said in a statement.
Longoria was humbled when she found out she would be acknowledged at the gala.
“As a longtime admirer of the programs the YWCA offers to empower women of all backgrounds, I am truly honoured to receive this award,” she said before the event.
The 38-year-old actress has been increasingly involved in politics since her role in hit US television drama Desperate Housewives came to an end.
Longoria was an activist and a high-profile fundraiser for US President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign.
Speaking to students at the University of Pennsylvania in October of last year she said she had described herself as a “political junkie” since she was 17.
She also shut down reports she had set her sights on one day running for office.
“I respect everything that politicians do,” she said. “I think it’s a very, very big job, but it’s not my day job.”
