An up and coming Kiwi drag queen has claimed the top prize at a Canadian event by co-opting Justin Bieber into his act.
Anita Wigl’it, real name Nick Hall, 23, had his routine praised by some of the top performers from around the globe.
Hall travelled to Vancouver, Canada, to begin his masters degree in music, majoring in orchestral instrument performance – trumpet, at the University of British Columbia six months ago.
But he decided to enter as Anita into The Search for Vancouver’s Next Drag Superstar, a four-week contest against nine others from around the world, held at Shine nightclub.
Anita was crowned the winner on Valentines Day after performing a lip sync to 80s power ballad Total Eclipse of the Heart with a surprise appearance by Justin Bieber.
The competition is inspired by reality television show RuPaul’s Drag Race – a contest to find the next big drag queen star.
His prize inlcudes flights to the show’s finale episode party in New York in April where he will mingle with drag queens including RuPaul.
“I’ve been thinking a lot lately about my life goals and one of them is to be performing professionally on a very regular basis and who knows, it could become my fulltime job one day,” Hall said.
“I get the opportunity to make people laugh,” he said.
“When performing in drag my style is definitely comedy so if I can make people laugh at me, or preferably with me, then I’ve achieved what I was hoping to do.”
