Not for the first time in their tumultuous history, bassist Kim Deal has left The Pixies. The group posted on their Facebook over the weekend
“We are sad to say that Kim Deal has decided to leave the Pixies. We are very proud to have worked with her on and off over the last 25 years.”
Deal, who also sings lead vocals on the band’s hits including Gigantic, answered a newspaper ad in 1986 that led her to become a member of the alt rock now-veterans. They broke up in 1993 due to tensions between her and frontman Frank Black, reuniting in 2004 for a few more tours, including the 20th anniversary of Doolittle back in 2009.
She started The Breeders during the 90s hiatus and just recently toured with them on the 20th anniversary of their 1993 album Last Splash.
This time, she’s busting out of the Pixies on her own while the rest of the band attempt to continue. Will it really be the Pixies without her That remains to be seen – and we may well see soon, if talk of a new album is true.
Just last month a Kickstarter campaign also raised over US$200,000 to make a photo book of the band’s history; now it may have to capture a new era.
But Black and the band are not quite letting her go so easy, in spirit, anyway, as their Facebook post declared: “Despite her decision to move on, we will always consider her a member of the Pixies, and her place will always be here for her. We wish her all the best.”
