Judges save Matt Giraud on ‘American Idol’ while Jennifer Hudson returns
It was an “American Idol” first. The night someone was to be voted off… someone got saved instead.
Matt Giraud, who viewers ultimately decided was not worthy of the competition, was given a second chance by the foursome of chatty “Idol” judges Wednesday night.
“It’s good news,” said Simon Cowell, hesitantly, as he informed Giraud that the judges had voted to preserve the 23-year-old piano-player.
As Cowell, Paula Abdul, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi deliberated, Giraud offered up a less-than-stellar rendition of Bryan Adams’ 1995 hit, “Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman.” But it didn’t stop the judges from keeping him around – at least for another week.
“This means two people will be going home next week,” Cowell warned, ominously.
It was announced several weeks ago that this new twist would change the show. The judges all had to agree on who to save, but could use their veto power only once and as long as there were five or more contestants. So if they hadn’t elected to exercise their newly-granted power during Wednesday’s show, next week would have been their last chance.

Before the ending, the Wednesday night airing of “Idol” was highlighted by the return of former-contestant-turned-Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson. She did not win the show, but Hudson has clearly proven to be the most successful person to come out of the FOX reality series.
Hudson performed a song from her latest CD, as did Disney starlet Miley Cyrus.
