Iron Man 3 filming shut down after Robert Downey Jr suffers injury during stunt

Studio has temporarily shut down production of Iron Man 3 after Robert Downey Jr. was injured on set.

The 47-year-old, who plays the lead superhero, damaged his ankle while filming a stunt on location in North Carolina.

The studio released the following statement: “Robert Downey Jr. sustained an ankle injury on the set of ‘Iron Man 3’ in Wilmington, North Carolina while performing a stunt. There will be a short delay in the production schedule while he recuperates.”

The actor is filming many of his own action scenes for the film rather than relying on a double.

Last month he was pictured hanging from a wire over Cape Fear River with a cast of stunt people.

He wore a body suit that will be turned into his character’s armor through the magic of CGI in post-production.

A crack team of stunt coordinators were on hand to operated the wires for the complicated high-flying choreography.

The film also stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Ben Kingsley, Rebecca Hall and Guy Pearce, and a details about the plot are being carefully guarded.

It is believed to be inspired by the comic book’s popular Extremis storyline, in which a scientist creates a drug that grants people superhuman abilities.

Iron Man 3 hits theaters on May 3, 2013.
