Award winning New Zealand author Eleanor Catton is set to collect another accolade.
She will receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Literature at Victoria University of Wellington’s May graduation.
“We are extremely proud to count Eleanor among our illustrious alumni, and look forward to formally acknowledging her achievements with an honorary doctorate,” Victoria University vice-chancellor Professor Pat Walsh said.
Catton gained a Master of Arts in creative writing with distinction from the university in 2008 and a Bachelor of Arts with first-class honours in 2009.
She was awarded the 2008 Louis Johnson New Writers’ Bursary, was named one of Amazon’s Rising Stars in 2009, and received the New Zealand Arts Foundation New Generation Award in 2010.
She was awarded the Ursula Bethell Residency at the University of Canterbury in 2011.
Catton teaches creative writing at the Manukau Institute of Technology.
Last year she won the prestigious Man Booker Prize for The Luminaries, as well as the Canadian Governor General’s Literary Award for fiction.
She was also made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the New Year honours.
