One could easily infer from covers of this week’s Kiwi gossip mags that the Duchess of Cambridge is a single mother.
Catherine and son Prince George featured on the front pages of the New Zealand Woman’s Weekly, New Idea, and Woman’s Day, but Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, didn’t get a show.
The Woman’s Weekly described the 8-month-old royal as a “real scene stealer” since he arrived in Wellington on Monday last week.
“Royal fans the world over had been waiting for months to glimpse the heir to the throne, whose last public appearance was at his christening last October.”
Regarding the royal welcome – a powhiri at Government House – Woman’s Weekly said Kate was a natural at the hongi. She upstaged her stepmother-in-law, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, who had struggled at the greeting due to a wide-brimmed hat.
New Idea reported the royal family stayed “in the lap of luxury” on their day off after arriving.
“Joined by only a few close aides, the royals reportedly spent 48 hours at the ultra-exclusive Wharekauhau Lodge in Palliser Bay, 90 minutes from Wellington.”
The five-star lodge has previously hosted A-listers Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise.
The Government had organised the royal’s stay at a reduced rate (it’s normally $460 a night per person) and police patrolled the area, New Idea said.
The magazine featured a two-page photo spread of Kate’s “Tour of Beauty” – highlighting her best looks so far.
Woman’s Day went a step further, however, and deconstructed each outfit the dazzling duchess has worn.
It noted Kate’s bright red coat was similar to the one worn by the late Diana, Princess of Wales, when she visited New Zealand 30 years ago.
Kate’s crew were introduced – nanny Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo, hairdresser Amanda Cook Tucker, and right-hand woman Becca Deacon – but still hardly a mention of William.
The magazine also had a spread on Prince Harry and his girlfriend, Cressida Bonas.
It was reported the dance student’s family last week called a “wedding summit” to discuss her future in the royal family.
So-called “well-placed sources” said marriage was a matter of when, not if.
Meanwhile, Wills was merely a background figure in shots of his stunning wife.
No doubt that’s the way he likes it.
