Futurama cancelled, again

Ten years after it was first cancelled by Fox, Futurama is set again for its final delivery.

Comedy Central announced that this seventh season would be the show’s last, finishing up in the US on 4 September.

The show’s entire original voice cast is returning for the final season, joined by special guest stars Larry Bird, Dan Castellaneta, Sarah Silverman, George Takei, Adam West and Burt Ward.

Creator Matt Groening says he was very proud of the upcoming season. “If this is indeed the end of Futurama, it’s a fantastic finish to a good, long run.”

The Sci-fi comedy debuted initially on Fox in 1999 and ran on the network until 2003.

Reruns ran on Cartoon Network, and in 2009 Comedy Central revived the show with new half-hour episodes. The series finale will close a run of 140 episodes, 52 of them on Comedy Central.

Futurama, which centres on Fry, Leela, Bender and their friends living in “New New York” during the 31st century, has earned several Emmys including Outstanding Animated Program in 2002 and 2011.
