Ok, what do we know. We’re at sea. We’re on a boat (but not in a deodorant commercial).
On the boat is Tom Hanks and his company is … a radar screen. Wait, is the radar’s name Wilson Is this Tom Hanks going back for the volleyball
No, hang on, it’s a Paul Greengrass film. Is the radar picking up a volleyball that is armed yet amnesic and about to try and kill Hanks
Oh phew, there’s someone else on the boat! Never have I felt such relief at the appearance of seamen. What’s more, it’s ok, it turns out they were just pirates on the radar.
These are no Penzance based merry men however and soon the whole blessed boat trip goes to Hell, announced by what may be the most menacing ladder in cinema history.
It’s the trailer is for Captain Phillips, the true story of American Captain Richard Phillips and the 2009 hijacking of his cargo ship by Somali pirates and it promises to be a high-tension thriller in which Hanks plays only one race, gender and personality (thank you Cloud Atlas for sowing that seed of doubt).
With our exclusive first look at the first trailer for the film which is due out in October, it is clear that these Somalis are going to regret choosing a cargo ship flying the stars and stripes. It’s also clear that the better film makers are making movies about real life attacks on ships rather than make believe attacks on the White House.
Wrapping with some aircraft carriers, speeding cars on runways, escape craft, a boarding party and one very menacing man with a blade later, it’s clear that Hanks is going to do more than just float around on this particular ocean.
