Speaking of the end of the world, here it is again. But this time played out – mostly – in far smaller scale, and to far greater effect than it is in World War Z.
Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride, James Franco, and friends have all survived the apocalypse. As in, they have not ascended to heaven, and are now boarded up at Franco’s house, bitching and moaning about missing out on eternity, trying not to kill each other, and perhaps survive long enough to convince God to let them have a shot at redemption.
If you liked Pineapple Express, Superbad, Knocked Up, or anything else the Judd Apatow/Freaks and Geeks alumni have produced, then This is the End will do you just fine.
The jokes are filthy, the improvising is occasionally inspired, and the whole schtick about men in their 30s continuing to act like 14-year-old boys literally never gets old. As with the best of Rogen and co, there’s a sweetness about This is the End that redeems its excesses. And, this time around, perhaps a sense that this really is the end, and that the troupe are ready to move on to projects more suited to their age. Hope so.
