Lucy Hale’s Fifty Shades of Grey audition was “awkward”.
The actress-and-singer may be best known for her role on Pretty Little Liars and her country music, but she almost had the chance for something much racier.
Dakota Johnson is the star who bagged the part of Anastasia Steele, but 25-year-old Hale also tried out for the raunchy part about a young woman who falls for a dominant businessman with a penchant for S&M.
“It actually was just me [in the audition]. It was a two-page monologue of exactly what you would think it would be,” she cringed to MTV.
“Very uncomfortable, but it was sort of one of those things where you just had to go for it or you’re just gonna look lame – hopefully, I didn’t look lame.”
The brunette added she didn’t have to act out a specific scene from E. L. James’ steamy tale, but that she did have to do some things she wouldn’t want her “grandmother watching”.
Hale is busy with her new album Road Between and her work on Pretty Little Liars. In the teen show she plays high school student Aria Montgomery and she thought Fifty Shades of Grey could have been a way for fans to see a different side to her.
“I think any girl in my demographic would have loved to be a part of it,” Lucy said of the opportunity. “Mainly, I was just interested in doing something risky and doing something a little different than my character on Pretty Little Liars, so it took me out of my comfort zone.”
