Fat Freddy’s Drop are back in Aotearoa prepping for their Blackbird Summer De-tour and recovering after a European tour which saw them play 15 sold out shows across Europe – over 37,000 fans attended the 19 shows in 13 countries in 28 days.
But Dallas Tamaira, aka Joe Dukie, is particularly pleased to be heading back to Christchurch as part of their summer tour.
Hey Dallas, the last time I saw you it was in your studio on High Street pre-quake. I had a look at what remains of the back of it on the weekend.
”Oh man, that whole neighbourhood got smashed. The Boxing Day quake, we were sitting in the corner at Globe, that was the last time I saw that street. Like a lot of people, I don’t think I picked everything up from that studio. We got up and left, moved to Wellington with the family which we’d been planning to do anyway, the earthquakes just hurried us up.”
How’s life How was Europe
”Good, Europe was massive. Now that I’m back home I’m spending quality time with the family, helping out with my new son. He’s teething at the moment so we’ve had lots of late nights. This is real stuff man. Joe Dukie’s not living the glamorous life.”
What are you most looking forward to about coming back to Christchurch
‘I’m really looking forward to getting back. I stopped in at C1 last time for a coffee, that’s the best place. I’ve still got a video card for Alice’s with some outstanding fines no doubt. I feel a bit guilty that we haven’t played Christchurch sooner. Last year we played at Mud House Winery and that was one of the best gigs we did. The audience was off the hook, the energy was so positive.” Can you tell me a bit about the setlist for this show tfnimrod ”We’re playing everything off Blackbird and other, older songs, too, it’s a big set.”
Going back to that High Street studio, I remember you playing me something that you were working on for your solo album, how’s that going
I’ve got a few songs recorded. After the Christchurch show, I’m going to stop off in Kaikoura and do a bit of writing and organising. I’ll record in Wellington and hopefully next year my first ever solo album will be out. I’m just doing music that I enjoy and love. Songs about family and about me.”
