REVIEW:
The Lone Ranger
(Disney DVD, M)
If ever a film was wrongly named it’s this film.
The Lone Ranger, played by Armie Hammer, is not lone at all. And thanks goodness. For it’s the interplay between his sincere lawmen of the American West and his trusty sidekick Tonto (Johnny Depp) which makes this film such a joy.
Jerry Bruckheimer and Gore Verbinksi cleverly chose to start the film at the end of Tonto’s story which is told to a young lad who is visiting a travelling circus. And what a fun story it is of the pair’s first meeting and their teaming up to bring justice to a land that has none.
To share more details of the plot would spoil the film for anyone who hasn’t seen it, but this is a film that switches track several times.
One minute it’s a tribute to the series that spawned it, the next it’s a love story, the next a tale of revenge, and so on. Actually it sounds something of a spaghetti western.
Did I mention the comedy I haven’t laughed so much at a film in a long time.
The Lone Ranger reminded me of an amalgam of films like Raiders of the Lost Ark and Pirates of the Caribbean with a traditional western thrown in.
This one deserves a sequel
The one disc DVD includes bloopers and a deleted scene.
