British comedian Dawn French has opened up about the “interesting pants” phase of her life.
In an interview with Australian TV show A Current Affair last night, French said she found being a single woman daunting after her 25-year marriage to Lenny Henry ended.
French, 55, who is now married to charity director Mark Bignell, said: “I did a little bit of excruciating dating, when you have to wear interesting pants, hadn’t done that for years.
“That’s the awful thing about dating. Tight underwear. We would all like to be in a big bra and pants and when you are in a secure relationship you can do that.
“Now I’m in the big pants again. I’m in a happy relationship. I’m in the Bridget Jones’s.”
Asked whether Bignell saw her in “interesting pants”, French replied: “He did see my pants. I’m not going to tell you exactly all about that. He was taken aback, let’s put it that way. It took a while for him to readjust.”
French said her divorce from Henry in 2010 was “tricky” but they both tried to behave for their daughter’s sake.
“Everything that needed to be said was said behind closed doors – loudly and fuelled by alcohol,” she said.
“We started as friends and that’s how we finished it.”
