British actor Daniel Radcliffe says he finds the earlier Harry Potter films “hard to watch”.
Ever a self-critic, the 24-year-old says his performances in the first few film adaptations of J.K Rowling’s beloved books lack subtlety and skill.
“There wasn’t a lot of nuance to my performance when I was young,” he told The South Bank Show.
“I find those early films very hard to watch, personally.”
Radcliffe, spied for the role of the young wizard while at the theatre with his parents, says the young cast never got acting lessons on set.
“We never had an acting coach,” he said.
“And there’s times we could’ve done with one. I know I could’ve.”
Thankfully, he says he has now got basic script and character analysis techniques down pat.
In particular, Radcliffe credits co-star Gary Oldman with helping him hone his craft.
“My best work in the Potter films comes when I’m in a scene with Gary,” he said.
Being so “starstruck” by his scene partner made him want to push harder to get it right, Radcliffe said.
But while the young Brit might want to cast a quick vanishing spell – Evanesco! – on the initial Potter instalments, no doubt his mentor would want to do the same with his recent Playboy interview.
Oldman sparked controversy when he defended disgraced actor Mel Gibson and said Hollywood was “run by Jews”.
He has since apologised for the remarks.
