Dad Army’s Bill Pertwee dies

Actor Bill Pertwee, who played air raid warden William Hodges in Dad’s Army, has died.

His death leaves only three survivors from the main cast of the comedy about a Home Guard unit in a fictional southern English seaside town during World War II.

The 86-year-old Pertwee, who had been ill over Christmas, died peacefully with his family around him at his home in Cornwall, The Independent reported.

He appeared in 60 episodes of the BBC’s Dad’s Army from 1968 to 1977, barking the catchphrase: “Put that light out!”.

As the Home Guard unit’s main rival and nemesis, he was frequently in conflict with unit leader Captain George Mainwaring, played by Arthur Lowe.

Pertwee’s death leaves only Ian Lavender, who played dim-witted Private Pike, Pamela Cundell who was Lance Corporal Jack Jones’ love interest Mrs Fox, and Frank Williams who was the show’s vicar.
