Coast fans flock to X Factor star’s show

West Coast X Factor finalist Jackie Thomas is rapt to be back on home turf for a one-off concert in Greymouth.

”I just love the West Coast,” extolled the pint-sized singer after she landed in Hokitika this morning, accompanied by a large television entourage.

It is the 22-year-old’s first time back in Greymouth for about three months since her rapid rise to national singing fame began as one of 6000 hopefuls, singled out as a potential winner from the start by judge Melanie Blatt.

She is the second of the TV3 show’s finalists to sing at hometown concerts this week before the two-day finale, which will screen live on Sunday and Monday nights.

Whenua Patuwai yesterday wowed about 1000 Christchurch fans at the Westfield Riccarton mall, and Benny Tipene will croon for Palmerston North tomorrow.

Thomas took to Greymouth’s Regent Theatre stage for today’s one-hour concert.

It is where she shone five years ago in Greymouth High School’s production of Grease in the lead role as Sandi.

Her mentor and show judge, acclaimed British-Kiwi singer Daniel Bedingfield, joined her at the concert, but the first stop on her whirlwind visit was to see her parents, Kevin and Donna Thomas.

They have visited her in Auckland during the past 11 weeks and will fly to Auckland, along with her brother, Jared, for the finale.
