She married and divorced one of them, made vital contributions to most of their classic albums as singer, songwriter and keyboardist, and eventually left them in 1998. Now Christine McVie has said she would like to rejoin British rock royals Fleetwood Mac.
“I like being with the band, the whole idea of playing music with them,” she told The Guardian. “I miss them all. If they were to ask me I would probably be very delighted … But it hasn’t happened, so we’ll have to wait and see.”
Fleetwood Mac were due to perform in Australia this month but cancelled the tour when bassist John McVie, Christine’s ex- husband, was diagnosed with cancer.
The former couple, who divorced in 1977, remain on friendly enough terms for her to have joined the band onstage in London in September for an encore of Don’t Stop, one of her best-known compositions. “It was amazing, like I’d never left,” McVie said. “I climbed back on there again and there they were, the same old faces on stage.”
She also told The Guardian that her ex-husband was doing “really good”.
“He’s having his treatment in LA right now,” she said. “[His doctors] caught it really early so he should be up and running in a couple of months.”
Christine McVie had been with Fleetwood Mac for 28 years when she left the group, attributing the decision to being “music’d out”.
“I suffered from some kind of delusion that I wanted to be an English country girl, a Sloane Ranger or something,” she said. “It took me 15 years to realise that it’s not really what I wanted at all.”
Whether Fleetwood Mac will resume normal service should John McVie recover, let alone have his/their estranged partner back, remains necessarily unclear. But Christine is hopeful for both.
“It’s a long way down that path if it ever were to happen,” she said. “John’s got to get well first, so it hasn’t been talked about. We’ll have to wait and see.”
