20-year-old, Kaitlyn McGrath, nanny to Extreme Makeover Weight Loss Edition trainers Chris and Heidi Powell’s 1-year-old son Cash save the boy from a carjacker.
The incident happened outside of the couple’s Mesa, Arizona home on Friday when Ms McGrath was sitting in the family’s Buick Enclave.
She was in the parked car along with the young boy who was playing on his mother’s iPad.
A man, later identified as Jasper Stewart, approached the car and knocked on the window before demanding that she get out of the car ‘or he was going to kill me and the baby’, McGrath told ABC’s Nightline.
Before getting out of the vehicle, she grabbed the young boy and ran back into the family’s home.
‘There was no question in my mind to save myself before Cash. It never crossed my mind to leave him or to stay in the car,’ Ms McGrath said.
Heidi Powell was inside the in-home beauty salon while Chris was in Milwaukee on a business trip.
‘I wasn’t there to protect my family and as a father this is our role this is ingrained in us and I have not dealt with that yet to be honest with you,’ Mr Powell told Nightline.
Even though the man got away with the car, the family’s security camera around their property helped police determine which way he fled.
Their OnStar tracking tool in their car was able to shut down the car remotely after it was reported missing, forcing the thief to get out of the vehicle and make a run for it.
Technology wasn’t done thwarting his plans, however, as he made the mistake of grabbing Mrs Powell’s iPad when he fled.
Because the trainer had installed the Find My iPad app on the tablet, police were able to activate it and determine exactly where the suspect was. He was arrested within a half an hour of the incident.
‘We knew exactly where the guy was,’ Mr Powell said.
The 35-year-old guy in question is believed to be a member of the Nazi Low Riders, a local gang known for their connection to violent crime.
