It appears that Justin Bieber, of all people, has united the United States.
A petition to eject the 19-year old Canadian pop star and have his green card revoked has gained more than 260,000 signatures – making it the second most popular cause in the three-year history of the White House site, the Daily Mail reported.
The only petition to draw more attention than Bieber deportation was the 2012 plea to declare Westboro Baptist Church a hate group in response to their anti-gay protests at military funerals, Washington Times reported.
Any petition that raises more 1000,000 signatures in 30 days must be taken under consideration by the Obama administration.
The call was made on January 23 by Robert Skryzynski, 24, of Detroit, after Bieber’s arrest for allegedly drag-racing a Lamborghini while drunk and with an expired license in Miami Beach.
“We the people of the United States feel that we are being wrongly represented in the world of pop culture. We would like to see the dangerous, reckless, destructive, and drug abusing, Justin Bieber deported and his green card revoked,” the petition reads.
“He is not only threatening the safety of our people but he is also a terrible influence on our nations youth. We the people would like to remove Justin Bieber from our society.”
Skyzynski later said he used the tongue-in-cheek plea to deport Bieber as a way to draw attention to the problems with the White House petition portal, which he said is open to exploitation from foreign powers.
The White House has said that it will respond to the petition, but has not confirmed a date.
Generally, responses are short and of little note.
Meanwhile, further expressions of dislike towards the star have been publicly displayed in Illinois.
A company in Illinois paid for a large billboard ahead of the high-stake hockey game between the US and Canada in Sochi, poking fun at the star-crossed teen idol, DNAInfo Chicago reported.
The advertisement depicts the singer flanked by two opposing team members, with the caption: “Loser Keeps Beiber”.
Unfortunately for the US, team USA lost to the Canadians, 1-0, yesterday.
