Yes, Lorde, we are a little caught up in your music love-in affair.
Thankfully, your mum says living the fantasy hasn’t changed you at all.
The parents of Lorde, real name Ella Yelich-O’Connor, said they were “in shock” when she took out both Song of the Year and Record of the Year at the Grammy Awards yesterday.
“As a mum, when I sat there, I was in shock,” mother Sonja Yelich told Radio New Zealand.
“You feel a bit dumbfounded when you hear your daughter’s name called out amongst such company. As Sonja said, we were both very shocked but also very thrilled,” father Vic O’Connor said.
For Lorde, today would be “just another day”, Yelich said.
“She’s a very calm person, she handles these things extremely well.”
The whole family, including Lorde’s three siblings, had flown over to Los Angeles for the awards show.
The family enjoyed a private celebration at the hotel with close friends and entourage following the Universal Music after party, while Lorde attended “a couple of after parties with her minders”.
“We knew all about that – she came back an hour and a half later,” Yelich said.
“The people who really matter in this whole journey, we were on the [hotel] rooftop having our own party… [that] culminated in us all jumping in the pool in our Grammy clothes.”
The family would fly back to New Zealand today in time for Lorde’s special performance in Auckland tomorrow.
The Kiwi singing sensation already had more projects in the works following her wins, her parents revealed.
“Clearly she’s not going to be going back to school, but Ella’s chosen a career… that stimulates her intelligence, and she’s involved in every single decision-making process. That requires fortitude and intelligence and we’re very pleased,” Yelich said.
“Ella’s got all sorts of things going on in that brain of hers. I know she’s got a lot of stuff she wants to get out – over the next six months, I’m sure she’ll create something new,” O’Connor said.
