Anonymity ‘lovely’ for Go Girls actor

Leon Wadham does not consider himself famous, despite having a leading role in the popular New Zealand show Go Girls.

The 23-year-old, who plays Levi Hirsch, said no-one recognised him yet, with only the third episode airing on Tuesday on TV2.

“Nobody knows who we [the cast] are yet, which is for the minute pretty lovely.”

Wadham started on the set of Go Girls after a fast-paced month of auditions and callbacks last October.

“I didn’t expect to be on such a well-loved show in my home country. It has been a delight,” he says.

Wadham says he and his character, Levi, have a few things in common, which is why he thinks he was chosen for the role.

“We both speak too quickly and make jokes at the expense of others, which we find hilarious but others may not.”

Wadham graduated from Toi Whakaari New Zealand Drama School in 2011 with a bachelor of performing arts.

He then starred in short films, feature films and worked with Circa Theatre before he secured the role on Go Girls.

Acting is not his only talent – he co-wrote Live at Six with his friend Dean Hewison.

Their original thought was to show the falsification of reality TV, but instead they decided to produce a show that showed how the media was open to similar manipulation.

“It’s very strange to see something you started dreaming up in a bedroom with a friend turn into a big, successful show.”

Last year Live at Six was performed at Downstage. This year it is doing a national tour.

“It’s got bigger and better every time and it is really gratifying to see it grow. I certainly never thought it would go this far.”

Wadham is unsure of his future, but would like to keep acting and perhaps venture into more producing. “I’m going to take it as it comes … I’d like to develop some stuff on my own.
