She is already considered Hollywood royalty and now Angelina Jolie has been made an honorary Dame by Queen Elizabeth.
The actress was recognised in this year’s Queen’s birthday Honours for her campaigning work against sexual violence and the use of rape as a weapon of war.
Jolie was in London this week leading a global summit to end sexual violence this week and was presented the honour by foreign secretary William Hague.
As Jolie is an American citizen, she cannot use the title of Dame, so receives the award on an honorary basis.
“To receive an honour related to foreign policy means a great deal to me, as it is what I wish to dedicate my working life to. Working on PSVI [Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative] and with survivors of rape is an honour in itself. I know that succeeding in our goals will take a lifetime, and I am dedicated to it for all of mine,” she said.
The announcement of Jolie’s award has been criticised by British Labour MP Paul Flynn, who said presenting it to a celebrity undermined the credibility of the honours system, the Daily Mail reported.
“The honours system is becoming increasingly discredited and this is another step in that direction,” he said.
“Angelina Jolie is doing creditable work but it is ridiculous to honour people who are already over-endowed with privileges and wealth.”
Other famous names on the honours list were actor Daniel Day-Lewis, who was made a night for services to drama, and actress Maggie Smith, who was made Companion of Honour.
