Album review: Hardcourage – FaltyDL

HARDCOURAGE
FaltyDL
(Border)

Luscious electronica from a New Yorker whose dalliances into the varied worlds of house and techno may have won him the ears of luminaries such as Thom Yorke and a reputation for off-kilter skills but whose scattergun output, until now, has been tough to pin down.

Drew Lustman apparently fell in love during the making of Hardcourage and there’s a definite spring to his step and smile on his dial throughout… squidgy basslines, playfully funky keys, daft-as-a-brush rolling rhythms: the sort of thing to make you hold hands with one you love, flat on your back in a meadow, and pick cotton-wool animals out of the clouds.

Lustman’s courage lies in his straightforward approach to this third full-lengther… there’s very little deviation from the ambient backgrounds and cheerful tunes; apart, that is, from the stunning vocal track with Friendly Fires’ Ed Macfarlane.
