Album review: Clawhammer – Bannerman

CLAWHAMMER
Bannerman
(Rhythmthod)

Three albums into a solo career under the guise of Bannerman, but better known to his mum and friends as Richie Setford, one of New Zealand’s most invigorating and satisfying artists has produced an album that you want to righteously declare belongs in every music collection.

Clawhammer features an eclectic cast of characters including Hollie Fullbrook and Alice Crowe and right from the get-go on Another Light lyrics – “these are uncertain times, I have left my courage behind” – that leave you gasping for air.

There’s a bit of Nick Cave about Bannerman’s full-bodied and darkly hued vocals but that’s only a reference point to describe the kind of beautiful tension that he creates in songs such as the droning There Is A lesson.

If you really care about Kiwis with the X-Factor you’ll do yourself a favour and at least give Clawhammer a listen.
