BLACK PUDDING
Mark Lanegan & Duke Garwood
(Liberation)
Collaborations seem to bring out the best in the restless soul of Mark Lanegan, who is probably best known for his time with Screaming Trees and Queens Of The Stone Age.
His two albums where he played Nick Cave to Kylie Minogue with Isobel Campbell are among his finest work, while his latest partnership with Duke Garwood, who as the guitarist for The Quietus gives Ben Harper a run for his money, is probably his most challenging and sonically adventurous album to date.
It’s very much bluesy in nature but his ghostly and melodic baritone and Garwood’s wheezy mumble are an almost surreal marriage where in tracks such as Cold Molly, Pentacostal and Shade Of The Sun you are taken to the shadowlands of loneliness and comfort.
