A chat with Rita Ora

Rita Ora insists she’s not a diva. And in deed the singer who performed last night at a sold-out Powerstation in Auckland proves to be a hard worker.

The 22-year old, who was born in Kosovo (former Yugoslavia) and moved with her parents to England at the age of one, shot to fame after she was discovered by Jay-Z and signed to his label Roc Nation.

Last year she released her debut album Ora, which went straight to No 1 in the UK.

But the stylish How We Do hitmaker also had to learn about the downside of fame.

Her relationship with Rob Kardashian and their public break-up provided her with a lot of unwanted attention.

Having your personal life talked about in the media was “definitely annoying,” she says.

Even before she became “Rita the singer”, she says, she had been very secretive about her relationships. “And when it goes public, like something I experienced last year, it just messes things up.

“You start to look at it more as a public relationship than what you were really been involved with in the first place.

“So I try to keep my private life as private as possible,” she says.

But in the end being in the spotlight is nothing she thinks about too much. “My motto has always been be careful what you wish for”.

“I just don’t think about the whole fame side of things, I just carry on what I came here to do, which is making my music and work,” she says.

On her whirlwind visit to New Zealand Ora did not only play a show but also spent a day in the studio working on her second album. “I am very focused on finishing the album by the time I finish my tour,’ she says.
